What to Consider When Evaluating MDM Solutions

Having clean, trustworthy, AI-ready data is foundational for modern businesses. But as many organizations are discovering, their data falls short of the standard. It’s messy, disconnected, and incomplete. And when they feed that data into AI applications, the results range from questionable to outright false. That’s why many organizations are looking to implement or upgrade their master data management (MDM) solution.

Modern AI-native MDM solutions like Tamr offer more functionality, flexibility, and scalability than ever before. Yet with many MDM solutions on the market, it can be difficult to distinguish the differences—and determine which solution is the best fit. In the 2026 Gartner® Critical Capabilities for Master Data Management Solutions,* Gartner provides a detailed evaluation of MDM vendors’ product capabilities to help organizations understand how solutions perform across real-world scenarios.

But in addition to evaluating product capabilities, we believe there are three other things you should consider.

3 Key Considerations When Evaluating MDM Solutions

While product capabilities matter, it’s important to look beyond pure features and functions. Every vendor, regardless of their position in the Gartner® Magic QuadrantTM, offers a distinct approach to master data management that may—or may not—be what you need. That’s why you should also consider the following.

1. The differences are in the details

While all the vendors in the report claim to address basic MDM features including the ability to create a golden record, support for operational and analytical use cases, and data matching and cleansing, how they address them varies from solution to solution.

For example, where Tamr differs the most from other vendors is in architecture and approach. We are the only AI-native MDM on the market. What that means is that we’ve built our solution from the ground up with AI at the core, unlike other vendors who have added AI on later to enhance their existing capabilities. Further, Tamr has invested in AI-driven automation and machine learning, with 19 patents to prove it.

If you look at where Tamr ranks highly in the Gartner evaluation, we believe it’s in the core capabilities that actually drive MDM success—matching accuracy, performance at scale, and data quality. By focusing on these fundamentals, Tamr acts as an orchestration layer that ensures actionable analytics, streamlined operations, and solid AI outcomes with LLMs and AI agents operating on trusted, unified data.

When evaluating solutions, these details matter. We encourage you to carefully review the capabilities that matter most to your business, and see how each vendor is evaluated. If you are a Gartner client, you can go here and customize the capabilities and weightings based on your Use Case to come up with a list of vendors that align best with your specific needs.

2. Bigger doesn’t always equal better

Just because a vendor offers a large portfolio of capabilities doesn’t mean they are the best fit. While a vendor may deliver broader data management functionality, those features may come with a tradeoff such as implementation complexity, ecosystem dependencies, or unpredictable cost of ownership.

As you consider your options, also consider factors such as implementation time and operational overhead. Ask yourself questions such as “How quickly do I want to see results?” and “Can my existing team absorb the operational impact without adding additional resources?”

A more focused solution like Tamr delivers consumption-ready data for analytics, operations, and AI initiatives. Our customers see value in days or weeks, not months or years. And because our solution is AI-native, teams can handle the day-to-day management within existing teams.

3. Priority alignment is the most important criteria

As you evaluate MDM solutions, it’s important to remain focused on your priorities. Although many vendors may seem like a good fit, only some will align with what matters most to you. Before you begin your evaluation, define your goals. And use those goals as your north star as you move throughout the evaluation process.

For example, if your goal is to deliver trusted data quickly, Tamr will likely align more closely with your needs by providing a faster time-to-value than solutions with a broader portfolio of adjacent capabilities that require much longer implementation timelines. Our approach provides fast deployment with prebuilt, domain-specific data products, AI-driven matching, enrichment, and curation workflows resulting in genuinely improved data quality. And Tamr’s real-time, event-driven architecture enables continuous data quality to support operational use cases. These capabilities check all the boxes when it comes to delivering high-quality, trustworthy data fast.

Tamr: The AI-Native MDM Standard

Tamr’s foundational use of advanced AI/ML and AI agents is fundamentally different from other MDM solutions on the market today. Tamr’s layered approach uses smart rules, advanced AI/ML, and AI agents, working together in tandem, to handle 95%+ of the work required to master data at scale. And it does so without requiring data teams to manage large sets of rules.

Further, using Tamr’s AI-powered entity resolution, organizations can confidently match and connect records across multiple domains and data sources. With automation at every step of the process, Tamr eliminates duplicates, connects records, and delivers accurate, scalable, and explainable results across enterprise data. Finally, we’ve built our architecture, workflows, and user interfaces around AI, an approach that stands in sharp contrast to what legacy MDM providers do.
